Interesting idea
I read online this shouldn't work but it seems to depend on the bush. I used it on two different types of bushes that just won't die and one started wilting and the other is unphased. For me it was a last DIY effort before calling in an expert.

2 Copper Nails Worked for Bradford Pear Tree Root -- No More Saplings!
Update: As of 10-2023, no further Bradford Pear saplings have appeared. The 2 nails have worked. The 25-yr.-old bradford pear tree was removed in late 2019. However, the root wasn't removed, and the bradford pear kept on sprouting saplings. After 2 summers of trying to weed out the saplings, only to find more saplings in a few weeks, this summer, in May 2022, already exasperated by new crops of bradford wannabes, I found these nails on Amazon. 1 nail went in to 1 part of the root that had been sprouting. I did a mediocre job of getting the nail in. So the nail went in about 1/2 way and just stayed like that. That was in May. No further saplings appeared there, or in the other usual places, except for one area maybe 4 feet away from the original nail. So in went another nail, at that part of the root. It's been several months now (late August same year), and really to my surprise (and relief), there just aren't any more bradford pear saplings. After those saplings being so persistent, in so many areas off of the tree root -- this is amazing.

See above comment.
The nails arrived minus some nails in an open package. Assumed opened by a previous owner who returned the nails👎

Great solution for killing tree stumps
I put four into an 8" diameter tree stump. No sprouts, no shoots at the base. Reliably kills the tree so you can dig out the stump a year later.
