Brother laser printers are beasts
I previously owned a Brother HL-5170DN laser printer released in 2003. That beast was 21 years old. It still works, but I was finding the lack of remote printing to be a limitation, speed was slow by today's standards, and the print quality was simply deteriorating. I also wanted to consolidate my separate scanner and printer with a sheet feed based scanner.I purchased this Brother MFC-L2900DW because I wanted to combine printing, scanning, and copying with the ability to print from my iPhone and iPad as well as my computers. My requirements were duplex copying, scanning, and printing.Setup was totally easy and so far this printer is working as expected with absolutely no problems just as the former Brother laser printer had done. Hope I get another 21 years out of this one. When considering a printer, especially for home use, if you do not need color printing, a monochrome laser printer is totally the way to go. Much longer lasting and much lower supply costs.

Another classic from Brother
Amazon had it on sale for more than $130 less than some competitors! This is another Brother classic, like the MFC2750 it replaces (after 8(?) years). From a "dead/cold" start to first page takes less time than the 2750, but from "warmed up" phase to print and page-to-page, it's quite speedy. SOLID BLACK, STREAK FREE (NO ink spills on any edges) printing when used with $$ Brother Toner. My new "go to" printer & scanner. [The "bluetooth auto replacement" scheme is not for me--no problem, just decline to use it.]

Generally works well as expected
Pros: Easy to unpack and setup. Good quality printing. Prints quickly and accurately. Duplex printing works well. Auto feeder works well for scanning or copying. Mobile Connect App is a good app and very useful. Apple AirPrint works well. Sounds like it’s built solidly but too early to tell.Cons: installation instructions could be explained better. Scanning directly to an email address from the Scan button on the printer display didn’t work and there are no explanations for an error message I received. Customer support didn’t have an answer. I had to use an App from the printer display and pre-register the email address ahead of time. Very cumbersome and annoying. Scan to email from the Mobile Connect app worked better but now multiple devices are involved. Not ideal.

Best printer/scanner/copier/(fax) for me!
Fast and quiet. Double sided scan and print. It is very fast so open paper catcher first. Stops quickly and quietly - my old brother took many minutes to quiet down. Prints black only, but that's great for almost all I do. My wife has an Epson color ink jet for charts and portraits.Easy to install especially if using usb plugin to get started. I couldn't be happier, except for the control panel light on often and some online? activity. WiFi compatible, too. Other modes I don't use.Had to set a function for double sided as every print job always reverts to single sided. 2->1 and 1->2 takes some fiddling as not permanent setting or intuitive.

Good hardware with kludgy software
I bought the MFP-L2900DW to replace a 25 year old HP network printer that lost support for drivers. Brother clearly had the best ratings over a new HP.Set up without downloading the software package was easy. I entered my wifi information on the touch screen and was connected to my wireless network in about two minutes. I then used the Printers & Scanners function within the Windows Control Panel, and Add a Printer, and was printing wirelessly within 10 minutes, from both a computer and from a mobile phone. The issue is when I wanted to scan and needed to install the Brother iPrint& Scan software package. It feels like several different packages that were stitched together. Everything worked, but it felt very 1980's. I was also asked at several points whether I wanted to share my system information with Brother (answer is no), only to be asked the same question again. The installed software works well now, but wonder if the software package will have the same longevity and able software developers in several years to understand the complexities of how the software ties together. I set up my remaining computers using the Windows Control Panel instead, without the software package.I'd like to get at least 10-15 years from this printer. Price was pretty good for a quality multifunction machine.

Possible identity theft via Brother support site
There is no way I would recommend this printer. The literature with the printer gave a website to set up the printer drivers. I got a fatal error message, and then was told on the setup literature that came with the printer to go to setup.brother.com. I did that, and I ended up getting a call after the online chat support said they could not help me. The call from that support call enter likely compromised my computer. After some effort, I got a Brother call support line, and that person disavowed any knowledge of these support people. It is a huge scam.
