Dig It Up! Fossils & Minerals

Very satisfying for my young 9 and 12 year olds. They did move to some heavier duty tools eventually, using our own hammer and chisel to finish the job, probably in less than 30 minutes between the two of them. I would say even a 2 or 3 year old would enjoy this, although they might need some help, perhaps making the rocks wet to soften them up first. Messy--best as an outdoor activity. As a parent I've grown to appreciate these sort of do it once, enjoy it, and be done with it kind of gifts that add minimal clutter to my life. The rocks and fossils were very interesting to the kids and they did identify and saved them.

My granddaughter announced that she needed a pickax to find treasure. I ordered this and a metal detector. We took a roll of $1.00 gold pieces and the gems and buried all over the lawn. We had a great day watching her with the metal detector and pickax digging up treasure. The only thing I didn’t do that in hindsight I wish I had was make a treasure map.

My 6 year old loves these! The first time we ordered them we didn’t realize that you’re supposed to soak them in water first. He excavated them dry and it took him forever to make his way through 12 of them! Which honestly was fine by me haha. It kept him occupied for a couple of months. I made a little spot for him to keep his dusty dirt contained and had a little plastic tray to keep the egg he was excavating and he worked on it all throughout the day!

My kids absolutely love all the dig it up products. Highly recommend!It makes a mess, but we're not a family that worries too much.

My 5 year old loves this, but beware it is very messy, even with newspaper down. It's like concrete dust. It gets all over their clothes. My 3 year old got dust I her eye, so I don't recommend it for under 5 yrs.

My daughter and her friends love finding the stones inside and the work it takes to get to them. They are neat colors.

Our son received a box of these for Christmas this past year. He opened one every day after Christmas for a week. Then, he asked to save the last 5 for opening when he could go out/on an "expedition". He has kept the guide to learn more about the fossils and minerals each time. The guide has also helped him recognize these gems when seen in stores. Great learning and fun tool for the whole family.
