A superfood adaptogen. Similar to maca. Worth trying for the health benefits.
To be honest, I have not heard of suma root before. After some research, it seems like quite the superfood. It's similar to maca, being an "adaptogen" and often considered to be the Peruvian and Brazilian ginseng (Peruvian maca,Brazilian suma root). The similarity includes the abundance of minerals, vitamins and compounds that exhibit many health benefits. Suma root is rich in polyphenols and alkaloids. Of particular import, suma root contains saponins, Amongst the many benefits by saponins, it has been shown to decrease cholesterol levels, lower blood glucose, improve immune systems and lower metabolic response to stress. This is quite the superfood.Like maca, it shares many properties similar to ginseng. It took a while for me to get used to the taste of maca (side note: there are three forms of maca: yellow, black and red; each with slightly different phytochemical profiles). I use it in some cooking/baking, but primarily mixed into my morning coffee. This suma root powder has a similar earthy flavor, though with slight bitterness. When mixed with a coffee (my morning coffee is a concoction that includes maca, beet root powder, spinach powder and protein/collagen mix that is sometimes flavored), the bitterness will not be a factor. I hope that with time and more acceptance/popularity suma root will be more readily available, following the maca route. This will lead to a reduction in price, and possibly a suma root extract with standardized percentages (the label of this product states that it's an extract, but with no details). This product includes a wooden spoon to mete out servings. It's a very attractive wooden spoon, but not very accurate for measurement. This aspect does not ding the rating, because the spoon is nice and somewhat epitomizes the holistic earthy element; Finding the health benefit of an ancient superfood that was used for health and medicinal purposes, and understanding the place of such superfoods in our diet. The label states that this is wild harvested suma root, and that it is pharmaceutical grade root extract. The product details has an image and text that notes: "100% RAW & NATURAL: Holistic Bin pharmaceutical grade suma root powder (Pfaffia paniculata) is produced with low heat root extraction to ensure we retain the most minerals and nutrients. It is 100% pure with absolutely nothing added. " And, it states that it is completely raw. The image of the Supplement Facts claims it is Sun Dried, Raw, and that it is Natural Root Powder Extract 100% Pure Pfaffia Paniculata (suma root). A bit confusing, but I gather their definition of extract is simply that it's dried suma root in powder form, not an extract that is a concentration thereof. By the way, there is no Supplement Facts on the product, which is disappointing.Overall, I am intrigued and impressed with this product, suma root. The few issues are minor, except for the absence of the Supplement Facts on the product. While the front label states some information on the contents, it is no substitute for the Supplement Facts. (They have the information, as brief as it is, so printing it an affixing to the product should not be an issue.)There's a good chance that suma root becomes part of my supplement regimen. I hope this company decides to sell this product in a larger quantity with a volume discount. So, I'm impressed with this product and the possible health benefits. I feel it merits a solid 4.75 star rating with a very high level recommendation.

Takes Some Getting Used To It!!
I'm new to Suma Root Brazilian Ginseng Powder by Holistic Bin. I was attracted to it as I have incurable but treatable cancer. I was diagnosed in 2011 and received a stem cell transplant on June 7, 2012. That is my new birthday as my old bone marrow was totally removed and my new stem cells were transplanted (they were my stem cells). The irony of the situation is that June 7 was my ex-husband's birthday!!My new experience with ginseng powder has arisen due to my interest in all the super antioxidants available. I'm trying to spike my immune system so I won't have to go into the hospital as often. I've decided I'll have to find another way to do so as the taste of this ginseng is not something I can get used to. I think others may be able to do so, but for me, I'll find a pill I can swallow without any taste. I'll recommend it for those of you who can swallow this powder, literally!!
