Modern Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 4th Edition

Needs to resolve more units into values of 'c'
Great text. The text book covers modern physics well from an undergraduate physics perspective. It does reiterate much of what is learned in first year physics. The major weakness in the book is that the authors seldom resolve units into values of 'c' ( the speed of light) doing so would modernize the approach to problem solving and make it easier to do work out the problems in the book. It would also help the students to think of processes as factors that related to light.

As much as you can love a textbook
As much as you can love a textbook. I had to have this for class so there was not really a choice on the particular book.

One of my favorite reference books for Modern Physics. Well written, well organized and an enjoyable read.

Good Book!
For being a high level physics textbook, this one is very easy to read and understand! Many of the difficult concepts are laid out in simple terms and there are plenty of pictures and diagrams to assist in the understanding. I rented this book as an e-textbook, and it was a fantastic decision. The kindle app makes viewing the book simple! It also allows easy highlighting (in multiple colors) and underlining. The best part of renting the e-textbook is a very easy return process and the price. by renting the electronic version it was approximately 60% off from the regular hardcover price!

Useless and cumbersome
So, if you aren't required to buy this book, don't. If you are, don't spend the cash on the new edition. Get the old one because most of the problems are exactly the same and just rearranged. There are a few that aren't in the old edition, but that is what classmates are for.The reason not to buy this book is because it is simply useless. I just finished a semester of dealing with it and it is poorly written, some information is simply incorrect, and it is entirely too cumbersome to read. The author is of the opinion that there is no reason to use one work where 23 can be put in its place. Furthermore, most of the problems in the book are not at all useful or practical. Most of them focus on basic elementary analysis and don't teach you anything about physics. Showing that one perfectly good equation can be rewritten as some hideous useless equation doesn't teach you physics. Problems are supposed to be a study tool, but in this book they do not help any level of understanding of the material in the preceding chapter. If you are student, try and avoid paying any money for this book because there is no point in keeping it. If you are a professor, don't subject your poor students to this useless lump of a $250 money pit. I spent most of my time studying out of and using HRK to solve problems. I shouldn't have to get another text to solve a textbook problem.
