Fun! More than a tunebook…
I was skeptical at first. But Liz does a nice job of explaining techniques throughout the book. I’ve been playing bluegrass and Irish music for over 40 years (has it really been that long?) but I’m new to the cello. At first, I just transposed old fiddle tunes directly to the cello using the same fingering as the mandolin. While that changes the key the tune is still recognizable. Liz explains the technique in an easy way. It may be a while before I drag my cello to an Irish or Old Time Fiddle session but I’m looking forward to the chance. Thanks Liz and if you ever teach a class in San Francisco sign me up!Go raibh míle maith agat!

All you need
I just received this book and am quite impressed. Full of great jigs, reels, hornpipes and more. Also history, technique, ornamentation and audio tracks. Speaking of which, I was confused because I read that CDs would be included. I emailed the author Liz and she got back to me right away. The audio tracks can be downloaded from halleonard.com. Go to the title page (first page after the cover) and it gives you the web link and code to access all of the tracks. Great for playing along! Learn, practice and most importantly have fun and enjoy this wonderful music!

Cool!! Very well done!! I love it and my cello teacher loves it!! I gifted a copy of it to her and she wants to do stuff with it. I study cello at Swallow Hill Music in Denver and it has a folk music style. This is a perfect fit!! Great book!!

The book I've been looking for
As a cellist coming from a sheet-music-reading, afraid-to-play-by-ear classical background, this is exactly the book I've been looking for. The first 80 pages of the book gives an outstanding foundation in traditional Irish style and how to adapt that style to cello. The remainder of the book is a transcription of Irish tunes written out in bass clef (!!) with no bowings or ornamentation. The intent is that you will learn enough from the first 80 pages to be able to interpret the tunes for your self. For me, highlights from the book are: suggestions on how to practice scales to develop spontaneous and improvisational bowing technique (Chapter 8) , exercises for developing ornament technique in the left hand (Chapter 7), basic theory of Irish tunes including common modes, rhythms, and tune structure (Chapter 3), and suggestions for listening and how to improve your ability to play by ear (Chapter 4). This book is the logical next step for me as I have already learned most of the tunes in Renatta Bratt's excellent book, "Celtic Grooves for Two Cellos" (where the tunes and accompaniments are written out with ornaments and bowings), and this book is helping me interpret tunes for myself and develop my repertoire so that I can play in sessions. One thing to note about this book is that it offers instruction in playing lead parts on tunes but does not cover accompaniment styles. There are no chords included with the transcribed tunes and there is no discussion of chord substitution or rhythmic techniques. For accompaniment techniques, Renatta Bratt's book is good, and Natalie Haas's instructional video from Homespun, "Grooves, Rhythms and Accompaniment Techniques for Celtic Cello" is excellent.

Comprehensive and Detailed
I love the level of music in this book. It is very well researched and compiled. Playing from this book from start to finish is a study in itself. It is more than a collection of Irish Fiddle Tunes scored for the cello, it is a comprehensive study. I am so glad I have this. It will be like returning to music school.

Lots of fun!
This book has 150, 9" by 12" twelve pages with about two tunes each or tips on how to play. The CD has both melodies and accompaniments for most of the pieces. I'm in 4th book Suzuki and the songs are quite easy--- if I play them at 1/10 of the correct speed. They're hard when you play them fast. The tunes are traditional, but I wasn't familiar with any of them. It also teaches you about Irish modes (Ionian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Dorian), different types of music(Reel, Hornpipe, Highland, Jig, Single Jig, Slip Jig, Slide, Polka, Set dance, Air), and this is only in the first 10 pages. It's fun.

Excellent resource for cellists!
Very helpful for figuring out how to play and embellish Irish melodies and not so much emphasis on how to accompany (common in other books). There's lots of useful information and material to work through. Highly recommended.

A complete disappointment.
I bought the ebook book to use on my iPad. It is a bad scanned copy. The orientation of the scan is wrong. I could not make it readable on my iPad. Do not buy the eBook version of this
