excellent alternative grain for sugar free breakfast cereal
This is an excellent alternative grain for sugar free breakfast cereal, so easy to make , just throw about 1.75 cups into 2 cups of boiling water, turn burner off, let sit for 10 min, then store in container for a week's worth of breakfast. I add 1 artificial sweeter packet, banana, milk, & blueberries, and I am energized for at least 4 hours. Delicious! The company is great, they goofed and sent only 4 bags instead of 6 on one occasion, and simply gave me a refund for my trouble.

Good (not great) addition to a modified whole grain diet
I recently made a drastic change to my diet, having gotten to the stage in my physical maturity when simply eating less wasn't going to make me lose the weight that was seriously affecting my asthma. A few months ago, I stopped eating regular food for lunch and replaced that meal with a big salad. Because I really don't much like eating salad, I started varying the kinds of salad that I was eating. I did some reading on the Whole Grains Council website and started using various whole grains in my salads, alternating them as a base with leafy greens. Amaranth was a recent try. It doesn't really work as a salad grain - cooked, it has a consistency of farina, and the texture is too slimy to eat as a base for a salad, hso I'll be using it instead like oatmeal, as a cooked cereal. For anyone out there who's curious as to how my new diet is working - it's been great. I started swimming again around the same time I made the switch, and have lost about 15 lbs in the last 5 months. Now I'm at the point where I might lose 1/2-lb every couple of weeks, but it's still good. The best thing about substituting the salad for a single meal is that I haven't denied myself anything - I still eat what I want at the other two meals, and I don't deny myself dessert. While I'm eating the salad, I'm not always the happiest camper, but I remind myself that the next morning I will feel much better :)

Grain of the earth
I ordered this grain because I am following the Ultra Metabolism 21 day detox phase...ok, stop the eye rolling. It's basically about removing potential allergens (diary, etc.) and cleansing yourself from processed foods -any sugar, hydrogenated oils, white flour...and although I dont eat that stuff in general, it's amazing how many "all natural" foods have high fructose corn syrup (many Marie's dressings, etc.)Anywho- my amaranth arrived quickly but one bag had burst open - the packaging was a joke! Amazon shrinkwraps books so they sre sealed air-tight, yet bags of grain soar freely in their big Amazon box, begging to explode. The other bags remained in tact - the stench from the grain takes getting used to. It smells swampy to me, but my sister says that's just "earthy."It's a complete grain and it cooks up nicely as a hot cereal - and it pops like popcorn, too.

good for you
I bought this along with the Buckwheat Groats. It has a funny smell, but I don't care, as long as it's good for me. It's an ancient whole grain that our culture has gotten away from. I learned about this grain from the book "Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss". I recommend it to others who want to loose weight and be healthy. No more white rice or pasta for me.

This was so loaded with sand or small gravel pieces that I finally had to throw it away
This was loaded with Amaranth sized sand or small rock material. I even tried to pick the pieces out, but the task was so time consuming and arduous that it just was not worth it ( no matter how much you love Amaranth) Maybe I just got a bad batch or maybe they swept some off the floor bagged it and sent it my way. Either way this would destroy my teeth if I kept eating it, so save some money, or at least chew very slowly and gently ; )

Good product.
I only have the complain that one of the packages was a little bit open.I boil the amaranth and put it in the fridge, and use it for my morning shakes with banana, mango, papaya, strawberry, or any other fruit,(and add spenda or stevia) during the week. It has much more calcium than milk, and is an antidepression food.

Arrowhead Mills Organic Whole Grain Amaranth, 1-Pound Unit (Pack of 6)
Love the quantity in separate bags. I like to mix the grain with Quinoa in my rice cooker with seasoning. After the grains are done I fill a bowl with fresh spinach and top with chopped up rotisserie chicken then top with hot grains. Yummy and healthy.
