Something wicked this way comes!
This new series of Whitechapel keeps its promises - and goes even further than the previous seasons. The Whitechapel gang (DI Chandler, DS Miles, DCs Finley, Mansell and Kent, not to forget unpaid crime historian Buchan) have their usual share of gruesome murders but with the added trouble of working in a 'haunted' police station.Flickering neon tubes, washbasins letting out dark water, droplets falling from the roof... Is it poor maintenance, sabotage, or something else? The lurking presence of Louise Iver, a creepy-looking old lady living at flat number 66b (uh-oh!) plants seeds of doubt in the detectives' minds. Mansell is terrified by eerie phone calls, Finley has an infected wound on her hand, Kent's reflection is cruelly deformed and Miles chases a ghost in the station's basement. Only Buchan keeps a cool head, only to be kidnapped by a perpetrator for his troubles! On top of everything, the green-eyed monster makes things difficult for young Kent, ending with blows between him and Mansell.DI Chandler's OCD is kicked into overdrive as he has to investigate horrible murders: people executed following witch-hunting methods, a killer flaying the faces of his victims, cannibals hiding in the sewers... All this makes it very difficult for Chandler, already traumatized by the death of his lady-love (season 3) and plagued by the souvenir of his father's suicide. But Miles' indefectible support will help him in solving cases, culminating in a beautiful scene where Chandler, the unaware angel of Whitechapel, stops the Isaac-like sacrifice of a young boy.But will DI Chandler finally manage to bring perpetrators to justice? Not certain, with Louise Iver around...All in one: a very good buy! I'm already looking forward to Season 5! Whitechapel - Series 4 [DVD] [2013 ]

Excellent Show! Slightly different from the other seasons but still very watchable.
*Some spoilers but not in depth) This season differs from the others in that there's something supernatural lurking beneath the surface. Whitechapel seems like the hub for grizzly crimes and this season seems to try and make sense of all that. I wish they'd allow DI Chandler to persue a romantic interest or at least attempt one. (They killed off one and drove away another in previous seasons.) They also created some friction between 2 of the detectives and I'm not sure I liked they way they portrayed one if the detectives looking sinister in mirrors and reflections when he really wasn't keen on his colleague dating his sister. It looked like he was evil and he is just an ordinary kid looking out for his sister. All in all loved the show! Wish it wasn't cancelled!

Missed it on telly
Good series.**SPOILER/WARNING***I did find it kind of laughable towards the end how messed up the squad was becoming. It was touch and go whether they'd lock up someone or get themselves locked up! I assme it was all ramping up to be explained in Season 5 by nabbing the old crone who appeared in the background etc. but the series was cancelled after this. So you will be left hanging for a proper explanation.

Fabulously Spooky!
I have loved this series since the first with the Jack the Ripper copycat killer and it has just grown in quality through the years. I was delighted when last year it switched from three episodes of one story to six episodes of three as with the new format it's on TV for longer. While I do like the first series I much prefer this one (4) out of them all, it has an extended horror movie feel to it without being too scary. The writing is genius as while there is comedy it doesn't over power the show in itself, the cases are well thought out and the history in all of them is far from irrelevant. Any drama that can effectively combine, murder with history and comedy so seamlessly as this has my full attention.I love it!

Wonderful Whitchapel
Excellent series. I forgot all about this series until I just came across it here on Amazon. Did not see it when it originally was aired (don't know why) but remembered hearing about it, so I thought "why not - let's go for it", so I bought all four seasons and absolutely loved them. Why on earth did ITV cancel the show after four seasons, it was so so good!! A real shame that yet another superb show is cancelled and yet they can still spend money on rubbish so called Reality shows. Just does not make sense to me. Anyway, If you haven't see it before then I highly recommend it. Go buy them now, you will not be sorry, I can assure you. Brilliant.

Brilliant yet dark crime drama
Brilliant crime drama, combining all the elements for great TV viewing. Outstanding acting that is both comedic at times, with pathos at other times. This is a series that deserves far greater publicity and should run and run. Only one gripe (for my wife really!) there are no sub-titles, but as they usually clutter the screen, and the actors diction is excellent, this doesn't in any way detract from the quality of the show. If you haven't bought it yet, what are you waiting for? Start from series 1, to get into the characters. There is little better.

A bit OTT
Like the second series of Whitechapel I felt the fourth and final series pushed the concept a bit too far. The storylines became more outrageous and ridiculous. Although the acting as ever was great I felt the storylines for this series weren't as good as seasons 1 and 3.

THIS IS IN PAL FORMAT (i.e. NOT viewable on standard Canadian DVD players)
This DVD is not in Canadian-viewable format. On the product listing at the top, under format, it only says "DVD". So unless you read the product description further down where it mentions that it's PAL format and not viewable in standard North American format, you will end up ordering something you can't watch. Suggest the seller change some of the description at the top to clearly indicate PAL format - not all of us read the detailed product descriptions. I just kind of assume DVDs I buy in Canada can be watched in Canada. :)

Like the previous series
Like the previous series, the episodes are engaging and the acting is superb. My only big complaint is that this DVD was not released with English subtitles (all of the amazon series have this), which makes it difficult to understand at times. Stories are rather gruesome but that's a characteristic of Whitechapel.Very engaging and the acting is great. It's a shame this is the last series that will be made. This DVD is PAL so it will only play on a multi-system DVD player.
