Q: Can this be used without being connected to wifi or the internet?

No you have to connect the hub to your wireless to take full advantage of it.

The Hub can use Ethernet and/or WiFi. Up to you!

Q: Does the sensor project like a single beam or a spread out beam? I need to monitor when someone crosses a threshold not before.

The YoLink Outdoor Motion Detector detects motion via invisible infrared light emitted by the source (a person) over a horizontal range of about 60 degrees (around 30 degrees vertical), based on my experience. If you want to monitor someone crossing a small threshold distance, say, a few feet, you will need to place the motion detector relatively close to the subject. Since the motion detector triggers on differences between the normal infrared background and the human subject walking through the detection area, be sure that the background is a different, and preferably a lower temperature, than the human subject in order to maximize detection accuracy. Detection acccuracy may vary with ambient temperature, solar heating and other weather conditions.

Q: Does the hub need to be connected to Wi-Fi for me to recieve push notifications on my phone or is the hub connected to your phone via Bluetooth?

You can receive device and hub offline notifications if the internet connection is removed, but yes the hub does need an ethernet or WiFi connection, for the app to work, and for the motion event-related alerts to show up on your phone. Bluetooth would not be good because you'd have to be in Bluetooth range, which is very short. The internet connection is what allows you to get alerts when you are anywhere in the world (with your cell phone having a cell network connection, of course).
