Q: I was wondering why some couplings are made with rubber while others with pvc. isn't rubber usually more flexible? what are the pro/cons of either?

Adaptors that mate unlike materials are often made of rubber. The normal elbows, size transitions, caps, etc. for a particular line of plumbing are made from the same material -- PVC or some other plastic. These are all made from uniform materials to enable glues that are tailored to the particular plastic to be used. e.b. black PVC pipe for drain lines has a specific plastic glue that efficiently makes tight joints between pipes and connectors that are unlikely to leak.Rubber joints are often used when "cutting in" the same pipe (where there's no way to move fixed pipes to make glued joins). In that case, you can slip the rubber connector over one end, roll it back, position the other end, and then unroll the rubber connector. I've used this kind of connector when fixing a broken sewer pipe, where both ends where buried and there was no way to move any of the old pipes to make the connection. I note that the stainless straps on the rubber connectors appear to hold up quite well even after being buried in soil for 20+ years. I've also used rubber connectors when tying in a new drain line (in a wall) with existing plumbing. I cut out a 12" section, glued a "T" connector with a short piece of pipe on one side of the T, then a rubber connector to tie it back to the existing pipe. I note that the plastic couplings tend to be lower cost than the rubber ones.

Q: Will this connector work to connect a 3" corrugated drain pipe to a 3" ABS (black) drain pipe? This is to connect to the pipe under the sidewalk.

Yes, it will. That's exactly what I used one for. This saved me from having to break a sidewalk section up to replace that last three feet of corrugated pipe, and it has performed perfectly.
