Q: can I use whole pans in this? Thanks so much!

This one will only hold the half pans. The larger one will hold 1/2 and whole pans also the Naked box which will be listed tis week holds everything inside- half , whole pans and tubes.

I can't answer that but I can tell you that this one (if it's the one that is made in the USA) has a great mat finish inside and a lovely shiney enamel outside. Just be sure not to get the made in China model. It's clearly not as well made.

Q: Can you put large pans on this palette?

Hi, this one you can only place them down the middle for the full pans. The side compartments were only made to hold the half pans.

Q: Does the tray that holds the half pans lift out of the box for cleaning?

No, but the individual pans come out easily and I have found that 8 more pans will fit into the middle for a total of 24 possible colors! I've used the box and found that the porcelain stains a bit with some colors. Still, it's a nice little rig. The small Rubelev palette with 16 colors does have a tray that lifts out.
