A very brilliant book.
Kanti Bajpai has combined his erudition with his flawless teaching skills and informal and formal travels, experiences, conferences, interactions and all to capture the very pith of the ailing India-china relations. There have been periods of entente, no doubt, especially from 1949 till 1959 and 1991 till 2000. But the relationship has been fraught for the extended periods, qua factors, endogenous as well exogenous. From 2005 onwards, the down-slide is continuous. At the heart of the matter is, does China care? The Comprehensive power parameter of China roughly is 7.2 times that of India's. The book also gives a beautiful elucidation of what the basics of Soft power are and how China beats India on that count hands down. The best part is that India is ranked as the 4th most favorable neighbour by the Chinese popular surveys, ahead of South Korea. Contrary to the common perceptions, there are protests in China at the provincial level, mostly driven by high utility bills, house rents, broken contracts, labour etc.A must read to understand the diseases relationship between the two 21st century powers.

Lucid and Comprehensive
Bajpai's core argument is that China and India differ in perception, power, perimeter and partner which is the reason they disagree on so many things. Its written in a very accessible language and serves as an intermediate level book for anyone interested in India-China relations.

Indians must read
Surprised with my own ignorance about china . Every Indian interested in development must read how China did it & understand what India need to do. We are very far apart . I see we as individuals in India has power to force some changes at various levels to align nation towards better living goals. Most Indian we see China in terms of war and military or cheap Chinese imports or even may be a great manufacturing nation , but the greatest transformation seems happened from bottom of pyramid and social commitment nation had towards all the stake holders. We talk about education and China did it . We talk about FDI and invention etc., China did it. Eye opener .

A great read
Great content and even greater writing style. This book brings in a fresh perspective vis-a-vis China. The first chapter 'Perceptions : From Regard to Disdain' provides a much needed insight on how civilian populations on both the sides of the border perceive each other and importantly, why. My favourite part of the book was however the third chapter 'Partnership : From Entente to Rivalry to Cold War' as it provided the background of the relationship between former USSR, the US, China and India which has been myriad with complexities. All in all a very good read. Bonus points for lucid writing style. Highly recommended.
