Laying Down the Rails: A Charlotte Mason Habits Handbook

I've recently discovered Charlotte Mason and her volumes. I've been hesitant to get any copies of her works because they tend to be so expensive, even for used copies. I felt like this would be a worthwhile place to start since my boys are too young for formal schooling. I was really hesitant because of the price but finally decided to go for it. I'm glad I did! I found this to be a great resource for a concise insight into some of Charlotte Mason's philosophies and as a general parenting tool. I feel like even if you don't plan to homeschool, there's still a lot of insight this book can offer. I do wish there was more elaboration on some points and advice on practical implementation of some of the habits listed, but it's overall a great resource and worth the price!

If you think this doesn’t have value because it’s quotes from CM, you may not know CM. It’s a concise way to look at habits. I think the caution I would give is to make sure habits are still done in the method and in relationship and not overly systematized.

Love this book! Brings up some great points

This is a book that every parent should read, and read regularly. The author does a wonderful job of laying out a framework of discipline that all children can benefit from. It reinforces the biblical model of parenting and equipping small children with tools needed to be successful in their lives.

This is not the original Laying Down the Rails - it is Laying Down the Rails FOR YOURSELF. They are two different books. This is misleading.I did not find the kindle version to be upside down as others have reported. Mine came through right side up. BUT it is extremely poor quality. The pages look as if they were scanned in, many pages are faded and lopsided and it is not possible to highlight, make notes, or look up definitions as with a regular kindle book.Lots of things need to be corrected before this should be for sale.

I'm halfway through and honestly I wish my library had a copy. The only reason I keep reading it is because of the price I paid. I've read a lot about Charlotte Mason in the past bit this book is blah in my opinion. I feel like the vast majority is just quotes from other books.

Love this book - one of the best parenting books out there and well worth the money. Also good as a self-improvement tool!
