Five Stars
Very good book for identifying Indian and some Nepali birds. Compact enough to carry in the field.

Wonderful book, but a little heavy as a field guide

Does a good job but is pretty weighty
A recent, 2011, field guide with distribution maps opposite pictures. Does a good job but is pretty weighty.

This is one of the best books for a field birder in the Indian Subcontinent
This is one of the best books for a field birder in the Indian Subcontinent. The bad review is however for the bad quality of the book which i received. It looks like a pirated book copy, where the paper is bad quality and print quality is extremely bad. One can hardly see details on white birds like egrets. I suggest buying this book from a real store, where one can actually see the pages and judge. I have previously owned a copy of the same book (bought in a bangalore bookstore) and it had lovely print, colours and paper was of high quality.

Handy reference during travel
Birds of the Indian Subcontinent is an informative guide for birdwatchers, particularly beginners. The page format gives all relevant information about a bird in facing pages. Illustrations are sufficiently detailed for comparing features of similar looking species.Very handy during field trips, no need to carry multiple books/volumes. One missing information is the vernacular names of birds, which would help the birders to communicate/check with the local population.

Great print, good pages
Great print, good pages, excellent pictures. Overall a great field guide. I am not an avid birder and I bought this based on recommendations from avid birders and naturalists. The binding of the book should have been better. Overall I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in india's natural heritage and wealth.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS TODAY.
Great field book and handbook for beginners and experienced Birdwatchers.Wonderful plates that provide most essential information on identification of bird species with maps of the region where each bird species is found. The plates give identification features, including voice of most species as well as Habitats and Habits. On the whole ..." A wonderful Book."

All you could dream of in a field guide!
I love this book! There is just enough information contained here for the birding enthusiast, rather than an ornithology textbook. I find it so much more helpful than Salim Ali's "The Book of Indian Birds." The images are illustrations, not photographs. They're bright, detailed, and comprehensively cover the entire biodiversity of the birds of the Indian subcontinent. An essential for both the beginners and the experienced.
