I Can Make You Feel Good: Tyler Mitchell

Pre-ordered this book at the height of BLM protests this summer, wanting to support black voices/perspectives. Thrilled with that decision -- each time I sit down with it I'm struck anew by the joy/positivity within. TM writes in the foreword about his vision of a black utopia and it's visible throughout. The subjects are comfortable in the camera's gaze, as if he's created a safe space -- lacking in the rest of the world -- for them to simply breathe/be in.Some of the shots reflect his background in fashion photography. In the context of the larger work they read to me as "now these aren't just models, they're citizens of their own world; now they're not just borrowing elaborate/expensive clothes, they own them and inhabit them." May not sound groundbreaking, but it's made me realize how inundated I am with images of black suffering/poverty/need/second-class-ness. This book replaces those images with a different story of black agency, imagination/vision, and safe self-celebration.For me, these photos illustrate TM's vision of a space to imagine, to build selves and families that play. The historical and current absence of such a space becomes all the starker by contrast.Art is subjective, so YMMV. And my experience with this book may not reflect the artist's intent. I'm not entitled to any correct or valid interpretation just because I bought this, but I'm glad I did.

Shameful! I'm speaking of the "paperback" cover. This book is described as a HARDCOVER which is a shameful lie! Otherwise, this book has the potential to be a nice table book and conversation piece. In regards to its contents WELL DONE. The photographs are stunning and without to much literature it takes the viewer on a much needed fresh journey from a cultural stand point. LARGE PAPERBACK WOW!!! I am so disappointed and feel cheated. Otherwise, my hats off to Tyler Mitchells effort(s). Had it not been for the misrepresentation of the cover material of this book I would have given it a score of 5 stars.

Love this book has a unique texture to the cover , photos are breathtaking , great read and looks amazing in my decor . 5 stars

This is not a hard cover book. The pages are also low quality paper (literally feels like construction paper you buy for kids) very disappointed

The photos are dope but I do wish the hardcover was an actually hardcover instead of a kinda stiff cardboard backing.

My review is about the book itself. Delivery was absolutely fine.I am such a huge fan of Tyler and its amazing how one book can change everything for good or for bad. Quality of the paper is bad. Everything about this book is so WEIRD- the paper, size of the book, the way images are presented - no white borders, no space to breath, while flipping through pages, essays in the beginning at the end... huge font. I have loads of photography books but this book felt so bad! It makes experience for the viewer so poor. I wish I never bought it.

Only ok. I was disappointed with the quality of the printing . I was expecting better as Tylers work has always been excellent

The product description indicates that the book is hardcover. The copy I received appears to be a soft cover. However I love the images
