Brings the Trail to Life
I have read several thru hiking books and this is one of the best. Through his journal and gentlemanly writing style, the Whistler takes you with him on this incredible hike. You learn quite a bit about hiking, people, and of course the trail. I enjoy him for perspectives of someone who felt the need to undertake this adventure. So many books on thru hikes the author can have a writing style that more or less demeans those of us who work at the office and have kids for not dropping them immediately to thru hike. This author does not do this. A great adventure and great read.

Good read
I recently ready AWOL and followed up with this book based on some Amazon algorithms. I enjoyed the diary format and it was easy to pick up and put down. I think I most enjoyed the evolution of the relationship with Scooby and often wish the author dove a little deeper into some of the connections he made as well as the stops along the way.

Wonderful and informative read.
I have read countless AT books, by far this one is my favotite, the pictures in the beginning of each chapter gave me the feeling of where Whister was and I was able to imagine myself in the same setting, he told a very true to life story and I didn't want it to end. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about hiking the AT. I'm a 67 year old woman with the desire to hike this trail for years but I've never reached that dream, circumstances never allowed for it but reading this book sure covered a ton of questions I've had about the trail that the other books did not, I liked all the books about the AT but this one is "hands down" .....my favorite. I look forward to Whister's next hikers book, good luck to the author and God bless you.

A wonderful way to share the journey of a through hiker
Whistler and I are about to finish his NOBO of the Appalachian trail. Each day he starts of his day with a cup of coffee and breakfast. I join him at breakfast and learn what we will experience that day. This book has been a beautiful way for me, a day hiker, to experience the day to day ups and downs of thru hiking. Bill's stories are vivid and he makes even the mundane day of hiking seem real and alive. I recently tripped over a root and took a good fall. The next day I read about his similar experience. He humorously named this phenomena being attached by the "rootapus snakeopotamus". That sort of outlook on daily events is what I love most about this book. He makes you feel the joys of a tough summit, the misery of weeks of rain, the joy of trail magic and the thrill of adventure. Anyone thinking about thru hiking or anyone who probably won't thru hike but wants to read about it should check out Whistler's Walk.

Captivating, live the experience through the eyes of the Whistler!
Simply said, Whitsler’s Walk was an excellent book. Although not a hiker myself (not yet), I was interested to sence the excitement of not only the experience of the voyage but the accomplishment of the huge endeavor. William Monk’s detail and passion in his writing style delivered on both of my expectations. From Day 1, I could hardly put the book down as I looked forward to the next experience. His writing was so personal, I felt the effort, emotion, challenge and the personalities of each person on the trail. The insertion of specific poems throughout the book was very clever adding another element to the book. I highly recommend the Whistler’s Walk as I suspect you’ll be captivated by each word as I was. Selfishly, I hope the Whistler will write another book centered around his next adventure!

Armchair hiker
I don't think I could hike it myself, so a novel about the hike is going to have to suffice. And I've read several AT thru hike books. Whistler's Walk has been one of my top two favorites! I almost felt like I was right there with them, or I'd be waiting in a trail town for them to get there. And I absolutely know that I will be reading this book again, as it is that good. Two thumbs up!

the delight and fears
I know what it now really means to live vicariously. From my cozy couch I lived this walk (too small a word) with Bill as I turned each page. I felt the pain, the elation, the adventure, the delight and fears. People "bucket list" chat all the time but Bill did it-and took us on this bucket list adventure with him. I felt like a shadow who did none of the work but experienced the immense and epic journey. Thank you Bill for sharing with all your readers such a personal journey. This reader is grateful and cannot wait to curl up once again and experience the next trek you will generously take us all on with you!!Big fan!!Mary MacK

A Soul Forged Anew
I will never walk the Appalachian Trail but William Monk's book has let me live the experience through his telling of his personal journey. From tearful partings to damaged feet and being soaked to the bone to witnessing the majesty of the natural world, he shares his walk with us. The pictures painted with his daily journal entries made all the more clear through the scattering of charming poems that came out of his life-altering walk. It's not often you get to share in a soul being broken open and forged anew, but in this book, you get to do just that.

Awesome read
I have hiked the AT and this was an awesome read. It is as close to the real thing as can be without doing the walking. It sure brought back in living colour, sweat and tears just what it really is like to go for a hike for 5 months. The loneliness, the friends made, the excitement of the next town coming up.It is a life changing trek and everyone comes out of it a different and better person.g
