Bought this and a whittling set for my 13 year old for Christmas. He's just beginning whittling, and this wood is perfect. Nice size and easy to whittle. He's made a knife and a little trophy.

This wood is not that good for caving with a Dremel tool.

The gift recipient said this wood was excellent to whittle!

As soon as I opened this package of basswood & the scent of timber filled around.. I was hooked, they are perfect for easy hold, smooth and as soft as ..well, soft as excellent basswood I suppose! One of these will turn into my 1st ever carved piece.. as this journey is just beginning! (67 yr old fe.. ) Maybe I can return here & post pic late.Earlier this week I checked on basswood at a craft chain store.. it seemed dry & old, lifeless..but this wood from here., makes me want to see what kind of critter will come out of it!

I'm relatively new to woodcarving and wanted basswood that experienced woodcarvers suggest instead of trying to learn using wood I have laying around and getting discouraged at the start. I'm glad I ordered this product. This was well worth the money as the wood's clear and the grain is straight. The wood is easy to carve and the size of the pieces is very manageable. After practicing on a few pieces I got curious and tried carving a piece of clear pine I had laying around....hands down this basswood is the way to go.

I love the smooth carving of Basswood for starters. The way that the wood is cut allows for several projects. My order was PERFECT for getting started practising whittling figurines. My first is a floppy hatted hillbilly. It's not like the pictures but that's what practice is all about. Next order will be 2"x2" as My hands are really large and I need that extra bit. It sure is nice to have a kit when you need to burn time waiting. I put my knife, strop and wood in a shaving bag. Perfect for anything.

The media could not be loaded. I have purchased these basswood blocks three times and they are just what I need as a beginning carver. I have used them to carve Santa Claus and Gnome figurines. I think they can be used for carving as my skills progress beyond being a beginner. They are perfect for me and just what I needed to gain confidence.
